I'm not familiar with Craig but I know of Fabric. Interesting little piece on him.

 

As fabric's resident DJ, Richards played the London club every Saturday for 18 years. Ray Philp hears a few things he learned along the way, from warm-ups to back-to-backs to the importance of playing for yourself.

I have a special place in my heart for Craig Richards.

That first Tyrant mix album holds great memories for me, being a student and being mashed all the time - dj'ing that kind of music, hanging out with lots of like-minded people, buying loads of records, sharing mix albums and being immersed in that scene.

There's definitely that "groove" thing that Craig Richards does - and that whole "journey" thing which sounds wanky and may be drugs related, but I definitely dug it. I've seen him play a few times, including at Fabric and I always loved it.

Interesting that he still plays vinyl and his comments on certain sounds and records only working on decent systems. I also relate to that "playing big / anthems" difficulty - you can't maintain that for most long club-nights and like he says, after you play one massive track, where do you go - you run out of space. It reminds me of being at the End in London, and hearing this amazing night just warming up gradually over a few hours and suddenly these baselines start creeping in a bit more and suddenly "whack" you're in this groove. Closest thing to a spiritual experience I ever had! The sound system there was amazing too.
